Aotearoa poet Sarah Broom’s evocative words dwell on a myriad of themes, including motherhood, inevitability, longing, illness, the forces of nature, intimacy, and quiet contemplation. For Broom, poetry served as an intervention similar to psychoanalysis—a place where she could confront the delicacy of possibilities and limits, the expansiveness of joy and despair, the mixture of courage and vulnerability, and the desire to live in the present while forging a poetic legacy that we are fortunate to inherit today.

This year, amid much global and national uncertainty, we invite those who wish to write and share poems that create space for reflective, weighty, charged, as well as quiet feelings and observations.
